ComBoard is an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app that helps you build and speak messages. We designed ComBoard to be private by default.
Information we collect
None that leaves your device. ComBoard has no servers of its own, no user accounts, and no analytics or advertising SDKs. We do not see, store, or receive anything you type, say, or do in the app.
What is processed on your device
Your messages and word learning. The words and phrases you use are stored only on your device so ComBoard can offer better predictions over time. This never leaves your device and is removed if you delete the app.
Text‑to‑speech. When you tap Speak, your text is read aloud using your device's built‑in speech voices. Your text is not sent to ComBoard or any third party for this.
Speech‑to‑text (the "Listen" button). When you choose to dictate, ComBoard uses your microphone and Apple's Speech Recognition framework to turn speech into text. ComBoard prefers on‑device recognition, so on supported devices your audio is transcribed entirely on the device and never transmitted. On some older devices or languages where on‑device recognition is unavailable, Apple's Speech framework may process the audio on Apple's servers under Apple's own privacy terms. ComBoard itself does not store your audio or send it anywhere, and recognition only runs while you are actively dictating.
Hands‑free eye control (optional). ComBoard works with Apple's built‑in Eye Tracking, an iOS accessibility feature you turn on yourself in iOS Settings. Eye Tracking is provided and operated by Apple at the system level — it moves an on‑screen pointer that selects buttons by gaze and dwell. ComBoard does not access the camera, performs no face or eye tracking of its own, and receives no camera images, video, or gaze data. To ComBoard, an Eye Tracking selection is indistinguishable from an ordinary tap.
Device permissions and why we ask
Microphone and Speech Recognition — requested only while you are dictating with the Listen button. ComBoard does not request camera access. You can decline or revoke these in your device Settings; the rest of the app continues to work.
Third parties
ComBoard uses Apple's built‑in system frameworks (speech synthesis and speech recognition), which operate under Apple's privacy terms. Optional hands‑free control is provided by Apple's system Eye Tracking. ComBoard integrates no third‑party analytics, advertising, or tracking, and shares data with no one.
Purchases
ComBoard is free to try for 14 days and then unlocks with a single in‑app purchase. Payments are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store; ComBoard never sees your name, card, or payment details. Whether you have purchased is determined on your device from your App Store transaction history — we store no purchase record of our own.
Children
ComBoard is used by people of all ages, including children. Because the app collects no personal data and transmits nothing, it does not gather information from children or anyone else.
Data retention and deletion
All app data (your learned words, settings) lives on your device. Deleting the app removes it. We hold nothing to delete on our side because we never receive your data.
Changes to this policy
If we add features that change how data is handled, we will update this policy and the date above before that feature ships.
